A £3m SEN facility to be built at Southville Primary School

Beard Construction has been awarded a £3 million contract to design and build The Bridge, a state-of-the-art special educational needs (SEN) pupil referral unit in Feltham. Built on an underused space within the grounds of Southville Primary School on Bedfont Lane, the new centre will provide full-time education and support for students, with specialist facilities for up to 30 children, aged four-11 in the Hounslow area.

Working with Hounslow Council, Beard will construct a single-storey building with classrooms, learning support facilities for pupils and staff, a hall, outdoor play space and parking for cars and bicycles. The new facility, which is being built to meet the increased demand for SEN pupil places in the Borough, will replace the existing pupil referral unit currently located in mobile classrooms behind Fairholme Primary School on Peacock Avenue. The scheme will provide a more central facility.

This is the second special education needs facility Beard has built for Hounslow Council. It follows the completion of a £1.5 million pupil referral unit at Woodbridge Park in Isleworth last year

“We are delighted to be working with Hounslow Council again on such an important scheme that will provide much-needed specialist learning support facilities for primary school in the area,” said Darren Humphreys, Contracts Manager for Beard Guildford. “As part of our commitment to making a difference in the communities in which we build, our Guildford office will be organising several educational events for Southville Primary School during the construction, including poster competitions and prizes. Our site will also play host to our industry mascot Ivor Goodsite, who teaches children about the dangers of playing on building sites and about how much fun working in construction can be.”

Designed by architects The Seaman Partnership and project managers Pick Everard, the new purpose-built building will have several energy-saving features including photovoltaic solar panels and a rain-water harvesting system. The project is being built to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating for sustainable design.

The scheme presented the Beard Guildford team with their first experience of working to Building Information Modelling (BIM) Stage 2, which requires a high level of collaborative working with members of the project team during the design process.

The Bridge is due for completion in January next year.
