Didcot's first co-educational school opens

Aureus School will form a key part of a new community in Didcot

For the first time Didcot is offering coeducational secondary learning as the new Aureus School opened for the start of term. This is the second education facility of three to be delivered by architects, ADP, with Kier Construction, on the Great Western Park site in Didcot, Oxfordshire.

The building, named after the Roman coins found at the site, is arranged around a landscaped courtyard, and overlooks the surrounding countryside. Working with Oxfordshire County Council and GLF Schools, Aureus School has been designed to provide flexible teaching spaces within one central learning facility.

The new school forms a key part of the new community for the Great Western Park development and provides facilities for local residents, as well as creating a sense of school community spirit for pupils.

The school is positioned next to the UTC Oxfordshire, which opened in 2015 and specialises in life sciences, physical sciences and advanced engineering for pupils aged 14-19. Aureus School will be working in collaboration with the UTC.

Aureus Primary School is due to open in September 2018 and will provide 420 places for pupils aged 3-11.  This is being delivered by ADP’s integrated design company, Corde with Kier. Construction work has started on site, and when complete, this will be the second primary school to be built on Great Western Park.

Hannah Wilson, Executive Headteacher of Aureus School and Aureus Primary School, said, “We are delighted with the finished school site - it is a modern design and very light and bright. Our teaching spaces include nine science labs and five DT workshops as we are a STEAM school. Our community spaces include an art gallery, a sports hall, dance studio, activities studio and football, rugby and hockey pitches. We are excited to be working in partnership with local and regional sports and arts organisations to offer a martial arts academy, a performing arts school and a community choir.”
