Engineering consultancy asks students for their predictions

Hilson Moran wants to know what students think the building environment will look like in 40 years

Engineering consultancy Hilson Moran has launched a design competition asking students in the engineering sector to explore how they think the design and construction of the built environment will change in the next 40 years. The competition is one of a series of events and initiatives taking place throughout 2017 in celebration of Hilson Moran’s 40th anniversary year: ‘Future Forty’ looks forward to Hilson Moran’s next 40 years in design and construction, and considers how the industry will look in 40 years’ time.  

The question posed to students: ‘How will the design and construction of the built environment change in the next forty years?’ hopes to encourage students to come up with a vision for the future of the industry and how it could benefit the world and society at large. Conceptual ideas and designs are also invited. The competition is free to enter and the winner will receive £1,000, along with the opportunity to take up a paid internship in one of Hilson Moran’s UK offices. 

Once all entries have been received, a shortlist of five will be selected and asked to present to the judging panel, which comprises:

Farai Mwashita - Mechanical Design Engineer, Hilson Moran

Wei Jiao - Senior Development Manager, Westminster City Council

Prof Peter Wynne Rees - Professor of Places & City Planning, UCL Faculty of Built Environment

Keith Priest - Founding Partner, Fletcher Priest Architects LLP

Martin Quinn - Project Manager, Great Portland Estates

Richard Halsey - Programme Manager, ES Catapult

In organising the student design competition, Hilson Moran reaffirms its commitment to championing technology and supporting the younger generation. The competition aligns itself with the wider goal of the consultancy’s Future Forty programme in celebrating not only the past but the future of the industry. With events taking place across the practice’s international offices, ranging from debates to hackathons, the Future Forty series will discuss innovation in its multitude of forms.    

Entries must be submitted by 24th April 2017 and the judging process will take place in two stages. The shortlist will be announced on 4th May and shortlist presentations will take place on 23rd May.
