Five reasons to go modular

Matthew Goff from Actavo says modular construction is a quick and cost-effective solution to the school places crisis

According to annual figures by the Department for Education, the school population in England has increased by 121,000 since last year (2015). Pupil numbers have risen for seven successive years and there are 470,000 more pupils in the school system than in 2009.

Given that the Department for Education has also said the government expects to deliver 600,000 more pupil places by 2021, this rising demand is putting pressure on schools to provide additional teaching facilities.

Following the start of the new school year, you may already be considering how best to accommodate extra pupils. Here are our top-five reasons why every school should consider hiring a modular classroom facility.

1. It’s a super-fast solution

Most schools do not have the luxury of time. We know that with project planning and build time, traditional building methods can take months, if not years, to complete an extension.

By hiring a modular solution, you can have the new facility in place and operational in weeks following an order being placed.

The fast-track method of hiring a modular classroom complex is up to 50% quicker than traditional construction programmes.

2. Modular facilities are adaptable

School buildings need the flexibility to adapt as needs change. Buildings may have to be completely rebuilt, extended or demolished over time.

The module units of offsite constructed facilities are able to adapt easily to changing needs. Hired offsite classroom complexes can be extended, remodelled and re-located swiftly with ease.

3. Cost-effective for tight budgets

Whether you’re looking for a bespoke classroom complex or a standard building, hiring a modular facility is considerably more cost-effective than purchasing, because you only pay for the building as long as you need the additional space.

With Actavo | Building Solutions, there is also the option to redeploy units by transforming them into new buildings. This is not just a cost-effective option, but also a sustainable one.

4. Compliant with specific educational building requirements

Modern modular buildings are a world away from the grey prefabs of they were 50 years ago.  Hiring a modular solution doesn’t mean you need to compromise on quality or design.

Buildings being used in educational environments are overseen by the Department of Education guidelines with excellence governed by world-class BREEAM standards. We’re able to deliver hired buildings which will out-perform bricks and mortar ones, in terms of sustainable, education building requirements.

5. Modular construction is less invasive

Modern methods of modular construction are less invasive than traditional construction. Units that make up the building are manufactured offsite and then delivered to site for assembly.  They are pre-fitted with electrics, plumbing, heating, doors and windows, thereby making the onsite building process a swift one.

As there is minimal onsite construction time, there are far fewer vehicle movements, which is critical to pupil safety and to keeping classroom activities calm.

If you’re looking for a quick, cost-effective, temporary building solution this new school year, hiring a modular building gives you many and various advantages. It can solve many of the challenges schools are facing – across the country – including rising pupil numbers and parental expectations, as well as the logistics of accommodating pupils against tightening funds.
