Flinders facilities complete

An AU$63 million redevelopment at Flinders University in Australia is biggest project since its opening in 1966

The AU$63 million redevelopment of Flinders University’s Plaza and Student Hub has been completed in Adelaide, Australia.

In 2014 Flinders University commenced the biggest development at its Bedford Park campus since opening in 1966, as its facilities were no longer fully serving the needs of the university community. The new Plaza and Student Hub brings together student associations and clubs, a retail precinct, food and beverage outlets, and 24-hour study and relaxation areas.

Adjacent to the Hub is a 2,000-seat amphitheatre featuring a giant LED screen, while accessibility to the university’s central library has also been improved. The development also includes sustainability features such as natural ventilation and a 100KW solar panel in the union extension area.

Mott MacDonald provided project management, environmental and independent technical review services during the redevelopment. John Dyson, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “The completion of the new Plaza and Student Hub coincides almost 50 years to the day since Flinders University first opened. This has been deliberately planned to symbolise the university moving into its next 50 years as a progressive institution that underpins the economic, cultural and educational life of south Australians.

“The new facilities are designed to entice students to spend more time on campus and engage in university life outside of classes. With a focus on interaction, engagement and services, the new plaza will be a vibrant place to learn, connect and play.”
