This year’s Higher Education Real Estate and Infrastructure conference will take place in London on Thursday 5th October 2017. The annual briefing discusses meeting the challenges and reaping the opportunities of delivering 21st Century, fit for purpose higher education.

Higher education real estate faces considerable challenges in setting and implementing strategies to meet both current requirements and the demands of an uncertain future – a future in which it is difficult to predict the numbers of students, the ways in which they will seek their education and how that education will be funded.

Change can be ultra-rapid, particularly with anything open to ‘digital delivery’.  For universities, undergraduate studies are not their only, or sometimes principal, focus. Research and graduate education are important functions and revenue generators. 

At most institutions, occupational training, in various forms, is playing an important role. Apprenticeship education, too, is bound to grow. Distance, blended and team learning, as well as flipped classroom programmes, are all being deployed, while demands continue for ‘more contact hours’. In addition, there are increasing opportunities for the institution to engage with the local and wider commercial environment. These considerations have significant implications for real estate planning.
