Designed by architectural, building surveying and planning practice, Cassidy + Ashton, the £7.1m programme has upgraded accommodation across the whole of the 49-block Melville Grove building at the University of Liverpool, providing modern facilities for 338 students.

The four-phase programme, delivered by the university’s in house construction team, has modernised existing accommodation to provide contemporary apartments complete with open plan living/dining/kitchen space and key card entry.

Internal finishes have been updated throughout, with white gloss kitchens complete with granite-effect worktops and stainless steel appliances and fully tiled shower rooms with ceramic sanitary ware.

The upgrade also includes new windows, a new mechanical and electrical installation, including high speed Wi-Fi and hard and soft landscaping in the development’s grounds.

Dave Owen, director at Cassidy + Ashton, explains: “The University of Liverpool is a forward thinking institution and this project provided the perfect opportunity to completely update the internal layout to better reflect contemporary student living.

“The aim was to create a high quality, modern, yet robust product that was homely but also had the feel of a hotel. Feature colours and a simple palate of materials were specified throughout in order to make it easier for the university to maintain and replace products as and when required.”

Andy Murphy, facilities, residential and commercial services at the University of Liverpool, adds: “The improvements at Melville Grove form part of a long-term plan to ensure that we continue to provide world-class facilities to our students.

“We are committed to delivering the very best teaching and facilities and we can only do this if we continue to evolve and strive for quality.”
