Manor Academy sees role expand with new school building

The government's Priority School Building Programme invested £14m in the Hartlepool Academy in 2014-16

Just a year after the doors of its brand new, purpose-designed school building opened, Hartlepool’s Manor Community Academy is continuing to see increasing demand for places, with only a few remaining for the new intake in September 2017.

Following a £14m investment in the site under the government’s Priority School Building Programme during 2014-16, the academy, which is sponsored by Northern Education Trust (NET), is now able to offer students a range of facilities, including a specialist performing arts area, state-of-the-art science and technology rooms and a carefully designed area for students with special educational needs.

The performing arts department, which includes dance and drama studios, music rooms and a theatre, enables students to study music and drama at GCSE level.  Not only is it one of the most successful departments in the academy, staging three productions each year, but it also holds the Artsmark Gold Award which celebrates schools that champion the arts and strive for excellence in their provision.

I am delighted to see a year on year increase in demand for places. The new building has given everyone a renewed sense of purpose and a real belief in the future - Anne Malcolm, Manor Community Academy principal

Speaking about the impact of the new building on morale, aspiration and the improved educational environment, Manor Community Academy principal, Anne Malcolm, said:

“I am delighted to see a year on year increase in demand for places. The new building has given everyone - teaching staff and students alike – a renewed sense of purpose and a real belief in the future. It also gives me great satisfaction to be able to share these vibrant new facilities with the local community.

“There are five good secondary schools in Hartlepool and I believe that choosing a school is rather like buying a house – you have to choose the one that is right for your child. Clearly, an increasing number of parents are feeling that way about Manor Community Academy.

“This is a friendly and inclusive academy and we think of ourselves as a family – the Manor family – where each student really matters to us. Our aim is to ensure that none of them leaves us without a qualification and a host of happy, positive experiences to remember in the years ahead. All our students are regarded as individuals and we are focused on ensuring that every child is able to realise their potential and their personal best.

“As our sponsor, the Northern Education Trust provides tremendous support for all our teaching staff and the academic performance of our students continues to go from strength to strength.  Our focus upon each individual student ensures that they are able to maximise the many opportunities available to them at Manor Community Academy.

“We have achieved a great deal in recent years and our new building is certainly providing a platform for our future aspirations.”

The future is certainly looking bright at Manor Academy and we have every confidence that the principal and her team will ensure this upward trend is sustained and academic performance continues to go from strength to strength - Ian Kershaw, NET’s chief executive

Ian Kershaw, NET’s chief executive, added: “We are delighted that the new building is proving so popular with parents and students and providing a much improved environment for teaching and learning. The future is certainly looking bright at Manor Academy and we have every confidence that the principal and her team will ensure this upward trend is sustained and academic performance continues to go from strength to strength.”
