Conlon Construction has completed its most ambitious school construction project to-date, a multi-million pound new campus for the King’s Leadership Academy in Warrington, part of the Great Schools Trust.

The ten-month programme saw Conlon complete construction of a 6,800 sqm state-of-the art building, purpose-designed by Pozzoni Architecture, to meet the requirements of the successful free school.

Funded by the Education Funding Agency (EFA) as part of the Regional Contractors Framework, the school has been constructed on greenfield land and will accommodate up to 840 students aged 11-18, with five-form entry.

Comprising a double height colonnade, a feature entrance and a glazed central atrium to each wing that maximises natural light into the classrooms, the new building replaces the school’s temporary location at the Bruche Community Primary School site, Seymour Drive.

It creates a progressive education environment that will focus on both traditional subjects such as English, maths, science, history and geography, alongside a wide variety of ‘enrichment’ activities, designed to help students develop their leadership potential.

Smaller class sizes are reflected in the new building’s layout, while the scheme’s sports hall, MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) pitch, gym and fitness studio highlight the importance of extra-curricular activities.

Michael Conlon, chairman at Conlon Construction, said: “Our experience in delivering education projects has enabled us to fast-track the construction programme and assist King’s Leadership Academy to take ownership of their new building.

“This school has excellent design values tailored to meet the aspirational education ethos of the Academy. We believe the high standards of construction and finish support the character of the school while delivering a practical learning environment within budget. We’re delighted to have been involved in such an inspirational school scheme.”

Shane Ierston, principal at King’s Leadership Academy, said: “It was vital that we were able to take possession of the new building before the summer recess and we have been impressed with Conlon’s project management, attention to detail and communication throughout the programme, which have given us the peace of mind of knowing that the build was on track.

“We’re delighted with the results and the students cannot wait to move in to their new school building!”
