Bristol Cathedral Choir School unveils new extension

The construction, built by Skanska, allows space for 200 more pupils at the over-subscribed school

A new extension at Bristol Cathedral Choir School, delivered by Skanska, has created space for more than 200 new pupils.

The first phase of the project began in 2017, with the conversion of a primary school into offices and music practice room.

Phase two involved relocating teaching rooms, increasing the space of a cycle store, and demolishing a garage to make way for a food kiosk.

Finally, phase three saw another structure knocked down and replaced with a new building incorporating a girls’ changing room, science laboratory, two general teaching rooms and a communal room.

At one point, work was halted for 14 nearly four months to allow archaeological investigations to take place.

Every year, this school is significantly over subscribed, so creating these extra pupil places was vital

“This has been a complex project from the very beginning and we’re really proud of the end result,” said project manager, Nathan Bowerman.

“We worked successfully in a complex stakeholder landscape, including Historic England, because the school is located close to the cathedral’s grounds. It was vital to the team that we delivered this project on time, to create extra spaces for pupils to attend this popular school.”

"Every year, this school is significantly over subscribed, so creating these extra pupil places was vital for parents living in the area and wanting their children to attend a Bristol school,” said head of school, Paul Atkins.

“One that stands out for me is carrying on with the construction works during the exam periods without disrupting the pupils. This demonstrated the team's commitment to work in a safe and healthy environment at all times."
