Caledonian is celebrating being ‘Highly Commended’ at this year’s Offsite Awards for its striking new £2.5m sports complex at Ashville College in Harrogate.

Shortlisted for Education Project of the Year, Caledonian received the prestigious award for the innovative turnkey solution it provided.

The Education Project of the Year was the most contested of all 20 categories at this year’s Offsite awards, with 30 entries and a shortlist of 10 projects.   The judges singled out Caledonian for the way it delivered such an individual and strikingly designed building, while still providing all the benefits of offsite construction and exemplary customer service throughout the process.

Ashville College’s new sports complex also impressed the judges with the possibilities of Caledonian’s SMART offsite construction system and how it was used to create the projecting entrance pod, large open plan gymnasium and full height windows to maximise natural light.

Paul Lang, Chief Executive Officer of Caledonian, said: “Being highly commended in this year’s Offsite Awards is testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole team. We offer a wide range of offsite solutions specifically developed for the education sector, ranging from individual classrooms and campus buildings through to entire schools. There has never been a better time for education providers to talk to us about how our offsite construction solution can help set them apart from others, just like Ashville College.”

The modular elements of this new sports complex were manufactured by Caledonian at its 40 acre Nottingham factory. Acting as principal contractor Caledonian also undertook the demolition, ground works, cladding and commissioning, completing the project on time and within budget.

Caledonian’s SMART construction solution meant that the building was effectively delivered to site 85% complete, minimising disruption to the “live” environment of this busy boarding school campus.  Located on a tight site, adjacent to the main entrance road and sandwiched between two existing school buildings, this was a challenging project.  The Offsite judges recognised that Caledonian had to adhere to these site constraints whilst working within the school’s very strict timescale – the sports complex had to be completed for the start of the new term.

The accommodation includes a new staff office, enlarged gym and training area as well as a new dance studio.  Modules produced for the dance studio were manufactured with a high performance concrete floor, ensuring overall stability and a solid base on which to install specialist flooring on site.  The works also involved installation of a new reception and waiting area, new changing areas, office, treatment room, accessible changing area and WCs.

An approved supplier on the £50m Education Funding Agency (EFA) Framework, Caledonian design and build for schools, academies, and other educational facilities, as well as residential, commercial, MoD and MoJ.
