Clitheroe college restoration scoops LABC building award

The heritage education building at Stonyhurst College was designed by Preston-based architects, Cassidy + Ashton

A heritage education building, renovated to a design by Preston architects, Cassidy + Ashton, has won a regional award.

Theodore House, at Stonyhurst College in Clitheroe, Lancashire, beat nine finalists to win the 2019 Best Educational Building in the North West award, run by the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) network.

The project, constructed by Lancashire-based Warden Construction, is now in the running for November’s national LABC finals.

The renovation, serving as a Christian heritage centre, was named for Theodore of Tarsus, a seventh century Archbishop of Canterbury. It includes sleeping accommodation for 30, an oratory, library, conference room, study rooms, and refectory.

The building rose from the ruins of a former Victorian mill, which served the college until its closure in the middle of the last century. It lay derelict until an independent charitable trust was formed in 2012 to raise restoration funds.

Cassidy + Ashton's previous work in the educational field includes three schemes at Barnton Community Primary School, Northwich. Their team - led by accredited conservation architect, Michael Hartley - received the award for Theodore House at a dinner in Manchester, attended by more than 600 architects.

“The project involved the repair and refurbishment of a Grade II listed corn mill to create the retreat centre,” said Hartley. “[It] was very challenging, not only in repairing and stabilising the existing structure, but also in successfully creating necessary accommodation within the existing building to provide residential, learning and secular accommodation.”
