Concord cuts lighting energy bills at University of Southampton by 20%

The University of Southampton has cut its energy bills by up to 20% at its Avenue campus by switching to energy efficient LED luminaires from Concord. As part of the Feilo Sylvania company, Concord has provided a bespoke lighting solution featuring a range of energy efficient, high performance luminaires, suited for the University’s varied requirements.

The University of Southampton’s Avenue campus is a former sixth form college, which was purchased by the University in the early 1990’s. At the time, it was substantially altered to suit the University’s needs. The interior décor and lighting installed in the 1990’s was deteriorating so a number of refurbishment projects have been undertaken recently to improve and refresh the campus.

A range of Concord LED luminaires with occupancy detection sensors have been installed at the campus as part of the refurbishment, dramatically improving the building’s lighting scheme and increasing energy efficiency. The Avenue campus has a mixture of two and three storey buildings, requiring substantial lighting throughout. The work included creating a new lighting scheme in the circulation spaces, lecture theatres as well as additional work at the library on campus.

High efficiency and reliability were the top priorities for the new lighting as the existing scheme was more than 25 years old, and had become inefficient and outdated. CEI Electrical and P&J Electrical were the electrical contractors on the project and selected a combination of products including Concord’s Unity, Mini Continuum LED and Myriad Square.

As well as their energy efficiency, the maintenance of the luminaires was also a key factor in the decision to select Concord luminaires, particularly in cases where there were high ceilings with difficult access.

“We wanted a lighting solution that would provide a unique look, complementing the architecture of the building while still providing the energy saving benefits we needed,” says Ray Smith, Electrical Design Engineer at University of Southampton. “Compared to the previous lighting installation, which consisted largely of T8 fluorescent luminaires controlled by simple switching, the combination of LED luminaires with occupancy sensing controls has provided us with an overall saving of 20% on our electricity consumption, which is fantastic. We are delighted with the new scheme and look forward to continued energy savings.”

75 off Concord Unity direct / indirect luminaires were utilised extensively in library study areas and a further 200 were installed in the lecture theatres and circulation spaces within the University’s Avenue campus to deliver optimum visual conditions for the students. The circulation spaces feature a combination of Unity, Mini Continuum and Myriad Square with Mini Continuum also featuring in the refurbished refectory, offering outstanding performance and distribution of light. Additionally, concealed Sylvania LED battens have been used to provide a wash effect on the ceilings in corridor study areas.

The University of Southampton has a reputation for sustainability and aims to embed sustainability in all of its work. The switch to Concord’s LED lighting has helped the university reduce its electricity consumption and reach its energy saving ambitions.
