International primary school extension gets green light

Planning awarded to International School of London scheme by Walters & Cohen

An extension to the International School of London (ISL) Primary School in Surrey has been awarded planning approval.

The proposal is to improve the existing accommodation for primary school pupils, adding a new building for secondary school pupils. This will include dining and kitchen for the whole school community, facilities for sports, science, drama, music, art and design, IT and technology, languages and general teaching classrooms, as well as library and learning resource centres for both primary and secondary pupils. New facilities for teaching and administrative staff will also be accommodated in this new building.

ISL welcomes children of all nationalities and is aiming to be an IB World School. The school’s ambition is to offer an ‘all through’ education from nursery to year 13, and pupil numbers are expanding: over a few years, the school has grown from 85 students to 230, and the plan is to further expand over the next three years. Walters & Cohen was appointed in 2014 as architect.

The school is sited on a large, open green space, and the new parking and landscape strategy improves the outdoor environment. While the capacity of the school will more than double, the design strives to maintain the school's nurturing ethos.

Giovanni Bonfanti, Director at Walters & Cohen Architects, said: "We are delighted to have received planning permission for this new building, which will give ISL state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, including a sports hall and multi-functional performance space. The fully top-lit atrium will become the centre of the school.”

Demolition is scheduled for April 2016 and work will start on site April/May 2016.
