The first new space in Nottingham Trent University’s ‘Greening the City’ initiative – the Boots Library Roof Garden - has opened to students and staff for the start of the new academic year.

The garden, on the fourth floor of the Boots Library in the university’s city site, comes complete with a student-designed planting scheme, is created using sustainable materials and offers Wi-Fi.  The green space, which accommodates up to 60 people, has been designed to be a great place to work or take a break.

Professor Edward Peck, Vice-Chancellor, Nottingham Trent University, said: “The Roof Garden is a fantastic new facility which students and staff can both enjoy.

“It is a beautifully-landscaped, modern open area that has been built to be as sustainable as possible.  We are immensely proud to be consistently ranked amongst the very best universities in the world when it comes to our environmental and sustainability credentials.

“Our world-class campuses are full of green buildings and green spaces like this one and the Boots Library Roof Garden is the first in a series of projects in the ‘Greening the City’ initiative.”

All of the wood used to create the Boots Library Roof Garden is sourced from sustainably managed forests and does not require treating with chemicals.  The paths are made from recyclable building materials and the plants used in the garden have been chosen by students from the university’s Brackenhurst Campus to encourage wildlife.

The flower bed edges have been made from recycled plastic and a rolling programme of Nottingham Trent University student art is expected to become a popular feature of the garden.
