St. Bede’s sixth formers in the new lab

New state of the art science lab at St. Bede's

A Bristol school has unveiled a new science lab with university standard facilities

A state of the art chemistry lab at St. Bede’s Catholic College is now available to all students, thanks to funding from parents and governors.

The college’s head of science, Ms. Helen Mason, hopes the lab will inspire even more students to go on to study chemistry and physics at A-Level and beyond.

“St. Bede’s is a specialist science college and our new facility is a strong investment in that status,” she said.

“It is the additional fume cupboards which really mark out this lab. These mean we now have a university-standard facility, which enables students to participate in a range of more, advanced and exciting practical experiments. Previously students would have been taught a number of concepts by watching a demonstration by the teacher or on video.

“Our A-Level groups have in the past also had to travel to Bristol University to carry out practical activities associated with their study. Although we are immensely grateful to the university staff for their support over the years, it is now wonderful to be able to have these excellent facilities here at St. Bede’s.

“We have a very strong take-up for chemistry A-Level; the lab is a real boost to our sixth form resources. I am sure also that the younger pupils will be delighted to be using these facilities.

“The desperate shortage of scientists and engineers in the UK is well documented. All science subjects at St Bede’s are popular, with outstanding success rates. We are confident that this lab, coupled with great teaching, will play a part in maintaining these high standards, capturing students’ imaginations so that they want to continue their study of the sciences at university.”
