Schoolchildren thrive in SATRO bridge-building challenge

Five schools have taken part in a competition run by construction firm Beard

Surrey pupils from five local schools gathered at Christ’s College in Guildford for a bridge-building challenge, supported by real-life industry experts from local construction firm Beard. Beard, an award-winning, £136million turnover construction company, operates across the South of England and regularly organises charitable initiatives such as this one.

The pupils, aged between 12-13, were taking part in the 'Year 8 Construction Challenge', run by educational charity SATRO. They came from, respectively, Christ’s College and Lanesborough School in Guildford, Rodborough Technical College in Milford, Carshalton Boys Sports College and The Magna Carta School in Staines.

Based in Guildford, SATRO runs similar events across the area aimed at introducing young people to Science, Technology, English and Maths (STEM) related careers.

Split into groups of eight, the pupils were given rolled up pieces of paper to form strong tubes and nuts and bolts and tasked with building a bridge to span a 1.5 metre gap. Teams had to carefully cost up their structures, balancing cost and efficiency as well as budgeting for any additional materials they needed.

At the end of the challenge, teams gave a presentation about their structure and each bridge was tested with a 1.5kg weight. The winning teams – awarded 'Best Construction' and 'Best Overall Design' – each received a £10 high street voucher and a Beard-branded mug and pen, all donated by Beard.

Beard pre-construction manager, Ollie Chun, commented: “We are really pleased to be able to support this exciting SATRO event which makes STEM-related subjects fun and exciting. It’s a great way to turn youngsters onto careers such as construction, engineering and architecture.”

Beard recently raised £12,231 for SATRO in celebration of the firm’s 125th business anniversary last year.

Dawn Ray, SATRO CEO, said: “SATRO has been fortunate to enjoy a very supportive and long term relationship with Beard, as one of our most engaged funders. We are always delighted by the high level of support they provide at our construction challenges, both in terms of their staff who keenly volunteer and the high degree of enthusiasm they bring with them.”
