Stepnell is building the new two- and three-storey boarding house for the leading independent co-educational school which will provide 60 modern boarder’s bedrooms, three common rooms, laundry rooms and staff accommodation, as well as car parking and hard and soft landscaping around the site. The new building comes as part of a larger scheme to develop facilities at Stowe School.

Designed by Rick Mathers Architects, the smart new boarding house will be finished with Bath stone and will be built in the wooded area between the South Lawn and Western Gardens.

Surrounded by historic Grade-I and -II buildings, the new student accommodation has been carefully developed through an extensive consultation process involving Stowe School, Aylesbury Vale District Council, Buckinghamshire County Council, Historic England, Stowe Advisory Panel and the National Trust.

This is the fifth project which Stepnell is undertaking at Stowe School and follows the firm’s recent completion of the new West 5 boarding house.

“We are delighted that this project has reached this milestone point in the construction,” said Stepnell Regional Director Chris Faulkner. “With the site located in the middle of the school campus and construction taking place during term time, our team is using its extensive construction experience to ensure that disruption to the school’s day-to-day activities is kept to a minimum. We are pleased to be working with Stowe School again and look forward to handing over this new accommodation scheme in October next year.”

Stowe Director of Operations and Estates, Mark Kerrigan, said: “Stowe School has had a long association with RMA and Stepnell. This relationship has ensured that the school has produced buildings of contemporary design within a nationally important historic landscape. The School offers pupils a first-class education within a truly magnificent setting. It is key that any new builds maintain and enhance our proposition. The new boarding house will be another fine example of how we have managed to achieve this.
