UWL's St Mary's Road campus gets a facelift

Stakeholder engagement and carefully sequenced phasing key for UWL campus redevelopment

The Future Campus project formed part of the University of West London’s vision to continually improve students’ learning and social experience, maintaining the university’s position as a leading modern HE institute in London. 

Bond Bryan worked closely with the University of West London, a team of consultants and a lead contractor to design and deliver the redevelopment of the St Mary’s Road Campus in Ealing, West London. The key element of the project involved demolishing a central building and replacing it with a new vibrant ‘Heartspace’, comprising of a library, performance centre and new student facilities. This new hub is now the focal point of the campus and draws the various buildings together. 

A daylit atrium at the heart of the campus allows for permeability, both visually and physically, and a new purpose built performance centre provides a large flexible space that can be used in a variety of configurations. A roof garden above the performance venue offers an external social space. The Library is drawn into the heart of the campus by creating a new Learning Centre that overlooks the four-storied atrium. At ground level, the Heartspace proffers a refectory, student services and a social hub.

One of the main challenges was to keep the campus open and operational throughout the construction. Bond Bryan Architects carefully phased the project and the design in order to minimise disruption to the student experience and to allow business continuity. Only the Library was temporarily moved off site. 

Zubin Masters, Associate Director of Bond Bryan Architects, explained the design: “The multi-storey heartspace through its use of extensive curtain wall glazing, rooflights and a simple but elegant palette of materials, provides a stunning focal point for student centred activities. The material palette is one of restrain and maturity to withstand changing trends and tastes as well as change in use over time. The muted colours contrast against warm timber cladding and create a neutral backdrop, allowing the interior scheme to be varied through the use of colour in the furniture elements.” 

The £50 million redevelopment project has taken three years to complete. Since September 2015, students have been able to make use of all new facilities at the Ealing campus.
