Walters & Cohen win the chance to design new school

The architects will design a new secondary school at Twyford Abbey

Walters & Cohen has won an invited competition to design a new secondary school at Twyford Abbey in West London.

Twyford Abbey is a Grade II listed building close to Hangar Lane Station in the London Borough of Ealing. After standing derelict for 28 years, the 19th century Abbey is now in a serious state of disrepair and is included on the Heritage at Risk Register by Historic England.

Walters & Cohen's proposal for the site refurbishes the Abbey for administrative and sixth form use, and introduces two new buildings for teaching, sport and dining facilities. The extensive and varied grounds will provide great opportunities for outdoor learning, making the most of the historic walled garden, open parkland and mature woodland. As the site is adjacent to the North Circular, creating a barrier against noise and pollution is a significant design challenge.

Cindy Walters, director at Walters & Cohen, said: “We are thrilled to be working on Twyford Abbey. Having completed many education projects, this presents a rare opportunity to work on a brand new school, and we are pleased to work with an enthusiastic and forward-thinking client and design team.”

Since 1994, Walters & Cohen has grown from two founding partners to a dynamic architectural practice made up of 32 talented people from around the world. The work of the practice is underpinned by a passionate belief in the importance of design excellence and detailed research into appropriate and innovative building materials and technologies. Walters & Cohen designs bold, contemporary, imaginative buildings that are fit for purpose, accessible and loved by the people who use them.
